Program Notes

Harmonixity is based on two different acoustical phenomena.  One is the natural harmonic overtone of each saxophone and the timbral transformations when blending from the fundamental to ascending harmonics.  The second is the resulting harmony of reverberation (both acoustic and composed), where a single line creates a sonic tapestry through its sustaining decay.  For this second phenomena, the music evolves amidst a melodic line echoing between the instruments, creating texture through elastically expanding 'instrumental' reverberations.

Harmonixity was written 2011-12 and commissioned by the newly formed New Thread Saxophone Quartet for their inaugural international tour, with the premiere taking place on March 16, 2012 at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference in Arizona.  This work is dedicated to George Lewis.
