About the Music

Richard’s music spans a number of musical genres, including chamber, orchestral, solo, multi-media works with video and electronics, works for dance, including improvisation and works incorporating Korean traditional instruments.  All of his music stems from his roots in chamber music and musical performance -- but often branch out to the experimental realm to showcase musicality in other aspects of performance.

His ensemble pieces (The Veins of Marble, Dark Flow, Flow Trio, Harmonixity, Adagios, la scene miniature, etc), explore the evolution of musical threads over time as they are passed from one instrument to the next. His multi-media works (Rwandan Images, Prisoner’s Cinema, Cosmicomics, European Images, Ruby My Dear etc) unify moving images and live sounds into a unique form of musical/visual/theatrical expression.  His solo works (Seoungeum, la touche sonore, Natural Behaviour, “in flow”, Shadow Flow, Moroccan Flow, etc.) feature virtuosic and intense acrobatics for the soloist.  Improvisation plays in a number of his works, including Stone Guitars, which can be performed for mixed quartet or guitar soloist.  Carrick has also written The Dragon’s Fire for Young Audiences and pedagogical pieces for young players.
